PERSONAL NEWSLETTER

You may recall that I had a DVT back in January 2004, so immediately the doctor told me in May that I could travel again, I booked my flight to Kenya. I have been able to visit Kenya three times now – although I have to inject myself before I fly. I did have another DVT while I was last in Kenya during September – so I am hoping it does not interfere with my future visits.

I am due to make a brief visit to Kenya on the 15th of November – so any letters to me before the 14th please

KANYAWEGI
Thanks to your support, the home is in great shape. We have completed the teenager’s house - this can accommodate another 16 children, with their own lounge and kitchen.

Much work has been done at Kanyawegi, a new coat of paint, improved drainage, and extra walling of the riverbank, are just some of the improvements.

CHILDREN

Agnes completed her teacher training in August, so after celebrating with Agnes at her graduation we are now down to 76 children. We still have 4 others in training – Caroline at management course, Hezron and Thomas at motor mechanic, and Quinta at hairdressing.

Three of our older boys complete their secondary education this month – so I expect that we will soon have to dip a bit deeper in our pockets when they hopefully start university.

Five children finish at primary school this year, so in January they will be starting secondary school - or training if they don’t get a pass (school year in Kenya starts in January)

Our two football teams are doing well, and we are now looking to start netball and volley ball – when funds permit.

FINANCE

This is a very basic outline, for a detailed account please see the web, or ask me for a copy

Kanyawegi 2005 – 2006 year, which ended at the end of May, we sent over £32,000 to Kenya, although this included a very generous donation to build the teenager’s house. We were caring for 77 children - costs included - £6,000 food, £1,500 cleaning and hygiene, £2,200 medical, £6,500 school, £1,700 office, £6,500 wages - and new equipment and repairs cost £2,000

Visits to Kanyawegi by the trustees are funded totally by the individuals concerned – nothing is taken from the sponsor’s donations for anything other than Kanyawegi in Kenya, and the UK auditor

Our most “interesting” year will be 2008 when 15 children will be leaving primary school, with most of them going to secondary school – as they are quite a brainy bunch. This could mean that possibly 2008 will see three children at university, and 37 children at secondary or training, - with the remainder at primary school or nursery. This will probably cost around £14,000 just for schooling them – but God has not let us down yet.

NEEDS - More school shoes, shorts, a DVD player, and a laptop computer.

FOOD 2 LEARN

We are hoping to start about 20 new children in January next year. The committee have identified these children, but we have decided to wait until school opens in January before starting them, as schools close at the end of November.

Our numbers went down to 107 recently, as two boys left the project to start work as fishermen, and sadly one girl died

NEEDS - Just more sponsors so we can make a sizeable dent in the numbers not attending school
